Nailing your Instagram game doesn’t have to cost a fortune – there’s a tonne of free resources out there to create, edit and plan your content, and luckily for you I’ve shortlisted the best ones. Be on your way to Insta fame with a little help from these amazing apps!
You’ve probably heard of this one! One of the most popular editing apps and a personal favourite, the presets are super artistic and it can be a great way to unify your overall theme by sticking to the same preset. Personally, I like to edit each picture based on the photo itself, so I tend to stay away from the ‘one filter fits all’ rule. However, this app is great for colour adjustments (I usually add a slight pink tone to photos to add some warmth but without it looking orangey) and adding a grain filter, which is a popular trend on the ‘gram these days.
Another one of my top favourite editing apps, I think this was the first ones ever used for photo editing, and I still use it for a lot of my pictures. I think I paid 99p for a specific pack of filters, but the ones free with the app are still amazing. The pack I purchased has ‘face smoothing’ options, although I don’t really use these – sometimes I’ll use it a teeny bit if there’s any patchy fake tan or a pesky spot, but I think it can look really obvious in most cases and I prefer having the texture of normal skin anyway! I’d never want to edit my pictures too much as I’d rather they look as ‘real’ as possible.
This app is a recent download that came up as an ad on Instagram (their Instagram advertising paying off, clearly!). Although the majority of the filters on this app require purchasing, the existing ones are really interesting and a bit different to the ones on RookieCam/VSCO. You can also finely tune the lighting, colour, detailing etc, to really customise your image to the perfect level!
A great staple app, this one is also up there with one of my favourite image editing apps. I always use this app if I’ve got a picture that looks fab without a filter, but could maybe do with a little tweaking here and there. I’ll typically just play around with the brightness/contrast, and adjust the colour balance to achieve the desired outcome. I don’t tend to use the filters on this app as I personally prefer the ones on the other apps above, but this app is definitely a fantastic option if you’re just wanting to make minor adjustments to your image.
Last of the editing apps is HUJI, a fun app which transforms pictures into a vintage disposable camera looking style. I saw a few bloggers use this and loved the style of it! The free version only lets you take a picture there and then with the effects, but if you upgrade (only 99p if I remember correctly!) it lets you apply the editing style to existing pictures. I don’t tend to use this that often as the effect can often be quite bold which wouldn’t really fit in with the rest of my content, but I love playing around with this app anyway!
This content planning app will totally change your life – and your grid! You can add in images and swap them around to see what photos/order will look best on your grid, so you know which images to post and when to post them. My theme consists of subtle colour flows and alternating a quote image followed by a normal image, and so forth – so this app is a life saver for ensuring I keep to that theme and that my grid is tidy and consistent.
This app is the absolute dream for Instagram stories! For ages I was editing my Instagram stories on Snapchat to use the nice text with a black banner, but when I found Unfold I saw the error in my ways. Unfold is so easy to use, and creates gorgeous and minimalistic Stories. With multiple layout options and customisable fonts, you can create a variety of content pieces that all look effortlessly classy. Want to see some examples?
